Escape and indulge in dance

Well it’s January 2012 and that pressure of losing those festive kilos that miraculously appeared from nowhere are here once again.  So I’m being pressured by so many of you to share my top tips on how to remove those kilos and get that body back to where it was once.

Now, to most of you if I said let’s ‘Escape & Indulge’ to lose these kilos and get fit, you would probably feel immediate guilt, as well as it sounding as though I don’t have a clue what I am talking about.  Well read on you might be surprised.

So here is your fitness plan of action for 2012 and yes you’ve all guessed it, it’s through the huge and proven benefits of dance.

If you haven’t already you are going to take those first tentative steps and escape into a dance studio somewhere near you (hopefully Karen Hardy Studios…).  You are then going to indulge yourself in a room full of empowering, stimulating, pulsating and dare I go as far as saying… gyrating sounds of great musical rhythms.  At the very same time you are going to commit to taking those first confusing even disorientating dance moves, in your huge baggy T-shirt!  Yes I know most of you will be wearing that one T-shirt that once lived at the back of your draw assigned for your home decorating days, should you ever get round to it.  Well the sad news is that your decorating day is not here but rather your guilt ridden moment of having to put that T-shirt on to hide that annoying additional curve that has appeared on ones torso!  (and yes this applies to you too men!)

With or without that T-shirt, once the music starts and you are moving you will experience a sudden enlightening of FREEDOM.  “I can do it, I’m dancing” you will hear yourself say but watch out you are about to go so appallingly wrong within three seconds of that euphoric moment.  And at the switch of a light here come the excuses…“Oh well, I can’t dance, I knew I couldn’t do it, I’ve got two left feet anyway and I can’t commit to a regular lesson on Tuesdays because of Sophie’s music lesson….” Oh dear dear me, are you listening to yourself?  You know yourself just how much you want to be able to dance, to show your friends or family that you have rhythm and that you have that one gift of life that so many millions crave for.  Well you have just chosen to join the millions of people with two left feet!

At the end of the day my wellbeing relies solely on a state of achieving a positive mind in the very first place and understanding a happy and positive mind offers a happy body.

Therefore, the first point you must clearly understand is only by completely escaping away from your outside troubling world will you begin to indulge in become the master of your own body.  So when you are next at the gym and on a running machine, with your earphones plugged in listening to the latest Gaga iTunes download you received for Christmas, reflect that whilst running you are also planning; when the children will get to their after school clubs, what budget you may or may not have hit, pondering over the staffing issues of why Sally just can’t get on with Harry at work and has now created an enormous low morale within your team.  Now ask yourself do you really need that when you are supposed to be developing a happy mind?

So let’s take a look at that Zumba class that has just opened up down the road for you to escape to.  That leaflet that keeps getting dropped through your door saying “come and join Zumba today and have lots of fun” or that poster that is up in your local newsagent every time you pop in to pick up your bar of Cadburys chocolate.  Yes that Zumba message is everywhere and you know you want to escape and do it but the incredible excuses just seem to keep creeping in….

Now, I could take you through the wellbeing advantages of Ballroom dancing but I think that has proven itself time and time again on your TV, every Saturday night during the Strictly Come Dancing season.  You’ve also probably created the most amazing excuses for not having called to book those Ballroom Dance lessons that you want so much and they are probably a variation on I don’t have a partner” and the second has to be “I’ve got two left feet!” Are you listening to yourself?  So strong is your mind that you have actually convinced yourself that you have two left feet so ask yourself this, when you next go to buy your pair of La Boutines are you going to ask for two left shoes!!!

Taking a simple dance style  Zumba class will get you  inspired by some amazing music, be fulfilled that you have actually learnt some dance steps, be rewarding that you’ve had an hour of fun, be stimulating that all your troubles were left outside for that one hour and you can now take the world on once again and finally be reassured that when you looked down you didn’t actually have two left feet.

I completely understand the fast-paced lifestyles we all live in today, with fitness dvd’s even trying to help you by creating quick 20 minute work outs at home but I would personally like to say, that once in a dance class you will be shocked just how fulfilling, enlightening, empowering and of course the greatest of ‘fun time’ you can allow yourself to indulge in… oh and don’t forget it’s guilt free as all you can think about is dancing.  And probably the real reason for doing the 20 minute ‘squat reps’ was not because of the fast lives we live but rather the dread of having to do the squat reps and worry about your day to day demanding lifestyles at the same time when you could simply allow yourself to escape for an hours indulgence in a dance class.

Well I’m now going to throw away the four empty chocolate wrappers I have next to my PC whilst writing this for you and then I am off to pay the delivery boy to stop him posting those darn Zumba class flyers but before I do that go ‘Escape & Indulge in Dance” and in the great words of the wonderful Sir Bruce Forsythe and Tess Daly, may I say….Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep Dancing!

So if you’re thinking of taking the plunge and giving Zumba classes a try why not try out ours, you won’t be disappointed! Book Zumba classes in London at the Karen Hardy Studios.

2011 – Wow, what a year for Karen and the Studio

Posted by Karen Hardy Studios in Karen Hardy Studios News, Strictly Come Dancing | Leave a comment

Hello 2012 and let’s keep on getting you dancing…

Karen Hardy’s dream of getting everyone up and dancing is going from strength to strength and looking back over 2011 we can see just why.  As Gordon Ramsay is to his cooking Karen is to that of dance.

January 2011 saw Karen coaching hugely talented up and coming international stars of the future – extensively at her London dance school, Karen Hardy Studios.  Couples from every corner of the globe, from as far as Japan to South Africa, Iceland to Australia all eager to gain expert knowledge from the guru of dance!  Then it was down to the acclaimed Bournemouth International Centre for Karen to adjudicating at the very prestigious United Kingdom Open to the World Championships.  Being a past title holder of one of ballroom dancing’s world grand slam events, Karen knows only too well the pressures and demands this competition holds for the hundreds of competitors who pilgrim to the prestigious event each year.

During February Karen dedicated her time through dance and care to charity work.  She was delighted to in 2011 agree to support CLIC Sargent, supporting children with cancer, and their families.  Having a six year old son of her own and having an acquaintance with a young 4 year old friend diagnosed with Wilms disease, she felt the happiness dance brought to her and wanted to share it with so many others not as fortunate.  Having a long period of spells in hospital as a child herself, it wasn’t difficult for Karen to say yes.  It also saw Karen taking time out to support the London Mums meetings.  Here Karen had the chance to let other mums know that through organisation, focus and dedication an excellent balance of work and family life can be had and using the blue print of her successful competitive career she has been able to successfully launch with her husband Conrad Murray their celebrity endorsed, luxury, lifestyle London dance school in Chelsea.

In March it was time for Karen to once again fly out to the great country of China, to work extensively in the huge dance academies out there.  Having worked there for over a decade now she has witnessed for herself the immense determination, focus and drive this nation has.  Often frustrating her is the lack of drive her own British competitors have, it is almost therapy to be able to work with such committed people who no matter how much she demands of them, they just keep asking her for more.  The end of March however was to be a highlight of the year for Karen Hardy Studios, holding their Masquerade Ball at the luxurious Wyndham Grand Hotel just next door to the studios.  A most lavish event unravelled, with champagne and canapés, celebrities and awards.  The night was an amazing success as well as a chance for Karen to raise more funds for CLIC Sargent charity.

April would see another first for Karen with a flight to St Lucia first with her husband and son first forming part of the agenda!!  Karen was invited on board the great ship Aurora (P & O Cruises) together with her family to share her Strictly Come Dancing experiences.  Not knowing what to expect but ever keen to spread the great life skills of dance, nothing would stop her… not even a wave or two!!!  With the Carmen’s ballroom completely packed and all keen to hear what she had to say, it wasn’t long before she had the room up and dancing themselves.  And the steps she would gently encourage them to do would be no beginners moves, but rather she had them lunging and laughing, moving and grooving just as she does with her magical ways on Strictly!

April also saw a trip to Italy coaching and adjudicating and a very exhausting and draining week at Blackpool adjudicating the British Open to the World Junior Championships. In which during this time Karen was also asked to choreograph some memorable routines for the great BBC show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’.  This was a most awesome opportunity for Karen to work closely with such talented people from other forms of dance.  And dare our ever patriotic dancer miss the greatest moment of the year as Prince Harry married Princess Kate?  Absolutely not, she was just disappointed not to be able to see their first dance!

May in the ballroom dancer’s calendar is what Wimbledon is to tennis or Ascot to horse riders.  Forming one of the greatest events in dance history the British Championships at Blackpool is where dancer’s dreams are made or broken, as once again the dancing world pilgrims to the UK to train extensively, prior to this prestigious event. Dancers enjoy the opportunity to gain a great wealth of knowledge in order to take them further in their chosen competitive dance journey.  However, dance is not only for the naturally talented, as the beginning of May saw a huge amount of people take part in a medals day at the Karen Hardy Studios.

Under exam like conditions, Karen Hardy Studio members are able to have the exclusive opportunity to dance in front of Karen herself and receive a report giving guidance and endorsing how well they are doing.  With the vast majority being absolute beginners this is a very rewarding day for Karen as it’s at the grass roots where Karen is fulfilled seeing people try hard and succeed in learning to dance.

June was a month to celebrate!  Firstly, the winning school of the CLIC Sargent competition won a master-class with Karen. Which saw Karen Hardy Studios packed with a room full of children all excited to have the chance to meet and ask her questions.  They then enjoyed a fun filled master-class and the highlight was to see her bring out her winning Strictly Come Dancing trophy for everyone to take a photo with her and a signed photo to take home as a lasting memory.

Karen Hardy Studios would now also host the first ever private corporate event with over 200 guests arriving by private boat outside the studio.  With a red carpet entrance into a venue that by day had seen people enjoying their private dance lessons but by night Karen Hardy Studios had been transformed into a luxurious location, with gorgeous white lilies and crystal drapes throughout, white chesterfield sofas and sparkling candelabras, two gorgeous bars serving endless champagne as well as an area to enjoy yummy sushi.  Not only that, with all the guests standing on a gorgeous sprung £30,000 dance floor the theme of the night had to be dance and that is exactly what unfolded.  With Karen as the host of the night, it wasn’t long before she had them up dancing the night away and when they weren’t dancing, spectacular Ballroom dance showcases were brought to the dance floor with the birthday girl and her husband also having learnt an array of dance numbers, this together with a wardrobe of costumes costing over £5,000 glimmering and sparkling, the night was a tremendous success.  So much so that when a fleet of privately hired rare and luxurious cars arrived at the end of the night to take the guests home to bed at the Savoy… no one wanted to leave.

July means a return to China for Karen, knowing she is returning to see how well her couples have blossomed since her last visit where she had left a bank of knowledge, always offers great excitement and anticipation for Karen.  July in China is always a little special as it’s also her birthday month and many years now have seen her celebrate in luxury aboard a huge luxurious five bedroom boat in Hong Kong harbour.

September means one thing only to the British Nation and that has to be – Strictly Come Dancing!  With an awesome launch show at the beginning of the month giving us all a taste of the celebrities that would be adorning our screens for three months.  Then came the surprise call from the BBC inviting Karen to be the new host of the Interactive Red Button during the live show!  Each week leading up to Christmas, Sir Bruce Forsythe and Tess Daly invited everyone at home to push their red button up in the top right hand corner of their TV sets and up pops Karen with a new guest celebrity each week.  Never having hosted before yet being given this great opportunity Karen jumped in feet first and had all her guests feeling really at home.  From the great Henry Winkler (AKA ‘The Fonz) to Fern Britton, each celebrity was invited to express what they saw unravelling in front of them on the dance floor live, whilst Karen interspersed passing on her wealth of knowledge and ever educating us all at home on what we might have missed! From top line to heels and toes, body gapping and so much more.

October, to Karen is ever demanding with great giants from the competitive dance world working closely with her again back in her studio in Chelsea.  This time it’s the International Championship season and a chance for truly great dancers to get the grand title of Open to the World International Champions, with the final event and seeded couples drawn to the Royal Albert Hall in London to battle it out.  With a 5,000 full to capacity, packed hall we see Karen not coaching or adjudicating but rather hosting this most prestigious event.  Keeping this huge audience entertained, as well as fully understanding the immense stress and nerves the competitors have on the night, it is not long before the room is packed with the most amazing atmosphere as Karen welcomes the great dance giants onto the floor to battle it out for the grand title at the end of the night.   With champions crowned and the history books updated for another year and the great Royal Albert Hall once again empty a moment arose for Karen on her own in the middle of this vast Royal Albert Hall to reflect back at the night that had been and a moment to remember when she had won this great and prestigious International title herself.

November and Strictly Come Dancing in full swing, sees Karen taking on her regular weekly slot on BBC’s successful It Takes Two show and her Choreography Corner role!  Initially being asked in previous years to sporadically offer the audience a greater insight into what was happening on the dance floor on Saturday nights Karen saw 2010 and 2011 turn Choreography Corner into a regular and major part of the weekly show.  This being further proven by enormous Facebook and Twitter mentions of people ‘counting down’ to Tuesday and what they would learn from Choreography Corner.  I don’t think there will be anyone out there who doesn’t now know what a Top Line is or a Pivot Turn!

With such a tight schedule but understanding her commitment to the competitive world of dance, November would see Karen back on a train to Blackpool this time to lecture at the very prestigious BDF (Ballroom Dancers Federation) seminars during the British National Championships.  An early morning start and a 12.30 lecture finishing with an overwhelming standing ovation saw Karen jump back on the train and head back to London for Strictly preparations but not before she had left a wealth of knowledge for everyone to take home and further digest to enhance their dancing dreams.

And so this year comes to a close for Karen but not without a huge sprint to the finishing line.  With Strictly Come Dancing turning into one of the greatest years ever, knocking the ‘X Factor’ off the top spot, the demands for interviews and red carpet events during the festive season were ever growing.  Not only that but Karen Hardy Studios was booming with the 9th December seeing its 3rd birthday and a chance for all its members to join Karen and Conrad for a complimentary ‘Red Velvet’ cake and champagne.  So with Christmas trees all over the studio, mulled wine in the champagne bar flowing and great Christmas music playing there really was a magical festive feel in the studio.  So with the end in sight and Karen still committed to It Takes Two weekly and the Strictly live show on weekends, as well as long hours of coaching competitors, there was still the end of years Director party to be had at the studio in line with the Strictly final.  But not before, a trip to see Aladdin in Pantomime with her son’s school!   With all of the year finally behind her, looking back and only documenting a brief summary of what has been a great and fun year for Karen to share her dance knowledge worldwide and here with us at home, it was no surprise to see Karen and her family jump on a plane out to Dubai to sit in the sun for Christmas.

What 2012 will have in store for Karen is a great deal more of the above and much much more.  From new opening nights of her club The Rumba Lounge for people to practice their dancing moves in a luxury party environment to overseas trips to further educate up and coming dancing stars, we look forward to sharing with you next year once again her journey in sharing her dancing dreams.

Top Dancing Tips to Help you Judge for Yourself…

Posted by Karen Hardy in Karen Hardy, Personal Karen Hardy Blog, Strictly Come Dancing | Leave a comment

Thought with this year’s Strictly Come Dancing competition being the strongest I have ever seen and feeling there are several great contenders for the final show, that I would give you some top tips you must be looking out for when you are making your voting choice on a Saturday night.  Obviously there is a lot of intense information that only the trained eye can see but I hope the following will be a quick reference guide to further develop your adjudicating eye:

Characterisation & Technique:  These are the two main and most obvious points you will need to assess in a one minute and thirty second glance and will form the essential ingredients of the all round performance.

Characterisation – Each dance you see on the show has its own individual characterisation (or personality) that must be present.  For example take the five Ballroom dances, if not given character they will all simply merge into one and all look quite boring and have no raison d’être!

Here is a simple and brief character required for each dance:

Ballroom

C – Waltz: An image of the man and woman circling the dance floor with romance and sophistication.

T – Waltz: A strong rhythm of 1,2,3 count must be seen.  Strong sense of Rise and Fall. Top line and ballroom hold maintained. Clear heel leads.

C – Foxtrot: Long sweeping lines across the dance floor, graceful, light and enchanting, like a monkey swinging through the trees my teacher once said to me!

T – Foxtrot: A strong rhythm of SLOW, QUICK, QUICK must be seen. Top line and ballroom hold maintained throughout.  Ladies hand rests gently on man’s right arm just before shoulder.  A good use of heels and toes will aid in the gliding across the floor effect rather than stomping.

C – Tango:  Strong staccato, assertive actions across the dance floor, with a sense of passion.

T – Tango:  Knees very flexed much lower towards the floor than other ballroom dances.  Ladies hand is not on top but rather maintained much further behind the man’s arm with a flat strong hand palm down.  Strong head flicks.  Mans right hand further around the ladies back than other Ballroom dances. Strong heel leads.

C – Viennese Waltz: Circles, after circles, after circles, moving around the dance floor. Light and with ease.

T – Viennese Waltz: Natural turns (meaning turning to right) feet do not cross, Reverse Turns feet cross.  Do not swing with the shoulders but rather with the hips.  Full body contact throughout.  Use of heels and toes.  Good positioning of the head for man and woman must be maintained throughout.

C – Quickstep: Fast, dynamic, intricate actions including kicks and flicks and a sense of running with ease around the dance floor.

T – Full body contact maintained throughout, use of knees and ankles to create a light spring throughout. Feet to achieve direction changes and not the arms.  Frame upheld throughout.  Contrast of timings essential as too many Quicks will look erratic!

Latin American

C – Cha Cha Cha: A relationship of fun interaction and play between a man and a woman with a sense of cheekiness.

T – Cha Cha Cha:  One leg MUST be straight whilst the other is released to create a strong hip action.  Stong hip actions must be seen throughout.  The dance is open and free but where possible the dance is preferred mostly with some form of contact.  NO heel leads at anytime. Timing 2,3 cha cha cha must be noticeable as the rhythm.

C – Samba: It’s carnival time. A sense of fun and happiness with a strong progression around the dance floor as seen with the progression of a carnival down the streets. It should be one big party experience.

T – A sense of bounce through the knees must be present throughout this dance.  NO straight legs.  Progression around the floor is essential.  Head and eyes up at all times to ensure a good poise maintained with weight in the balls of the feet.

C – Rumba:  A romantic, intimate relationship between the man and the woman.  Sensuality with vigorous hip movement to further enhance the pantomime of the provocative Latin gestures from Cuba.

T – Strong hip actions throughout.  Good poise with extended use of arms to further enhance the slow movements.  Timing is a challenge as there are four beats with only three steps and so no Rumba walking action on the ‘1’.

C – Paso Doble:  The picture of a bull fight seen with the Torero (Matador) and the Capa (cape) being seen through the great story and shapes created through the choreography.  Never is the woman a ‘BULL’…. but rather more likely the strong character of a gypsy woman.

T – Paso Doble:  The only dance of the Latin division where heel leads must be seen to ensure strong body flight across the dance floor.  As like the Samba this dance must also be seen to progress around the dance floor addressing all the audience.  Strong arm shaping, a lifting of the chest and the pelvis maintained in a strong forward position must be seen throughout this dance.

C – Jive:  The time of the great GI soldiers in the big dance halls of the war times letting all their stresses go and enjoying enthusiastic times of throwing their ladies around the dance floor.  Fast, exciting with flicks and kicks makes this the dance of the fittest.

T – Jive:  Soft knees throughout to ensure a spring from foot to foot.  A swinging of the hips with lots of underarm turns and spins. A strong rotational non-stop dance.  Presented as a more central dance on the dance floor without the progression of the Samba or Paso ensure stronger images of turning and swirling.  Arms must be finished in this dance or it will tend to look a bit messy due to the speed of the dance needing to be maintained throughout.

 Other

C – Salsa:  A hot party atmosphere in a tightly packed club in Cuba is what we are looking for here.

T – Salsa: Knees flexed throughout.  Lots of intricate arm patterns.  Lots of side to side patterns further enhances this dance. Lifts are allowed in this dance.

C – Argentine Tango: A man and woman meeting with intensity and closeness.  There should be a clear relationship and to a point of battle of the wills.

T – Argentine Tango: The upper bodies should aim to remain close together and their lower bodies apart.  The lady can even rest her head on the man’s chest.  The use of decorations – where the lady will rub her ankles up and down the man’s leg or sandwich where the man will block the ladies foot with his are great to look for.

C – Charleston: A live and vivacious dance, with over acted, theatrical actions facially and through the body language.

T – Charleston: Strong twisting and kicking of the feet must be seen with feet often going in one direction and the feet the other.  Great poise throughout must be held.

C – American Smooth:  The ultimate Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance.  A graceful moment of dance that breaks in and out of hold with the inclusion of three lifts allowed.

T – Technically the information remains the same as above for the ballroom dance used as the foundation typically a Foxtrot or Waltz.  Attention will be drawn to the ease at which lift work is entered and exited with grace and ease.

C – Showcase:  The dance of all dances, where anything goes.  Any style of dance can be used from the Ballroom to the Latin categories and even an amalgamation of dances.  As much lift work as possible can be chosen or even a theatrical theme.  It is whatever is going to bring that ultimate standing ovation.  Audiences should be left wowed, speechless and blown away from the unbelievable showdown performance.

T – Technique will be based around the chosen dances for the showcase, if Ballroom good top lines and body contact etc, if Latin great shapes and lines with dynamic appeal.  The closest attention will be paid to the story line with it growing to a grand finale as well as the accuracy and ease at which any lift work is carried out.

These are just some very small tips to use in helping you choose your winner on a Saturday night.  You can even print them out and use them as a quick reference point then write your marks and see how well you do.

Happy dancing….

It’s all about ‘Lifts’… or is it?

Posted by Karen Hardy in Personal Karen Hardy Blog | Leave a comment

With a whole big discussion breaking out on forums and people asking my thoughts of  ‘Lift Work’ being over used on Strictly Come Dancing,  I thought it would form the basis of my next post.

Reflecting back over my dancing career the words ‘Lift Work’ never even existed or if so were the forbidden words from ‘the dark side’…..but more importantly, I remember that to my partner, it was an instant and absolute ‘NO’ should the discussion even attempt to raise its head at training.  Lift work would never be considered within our dance performances!  My great professors and my partner were very clear that lifts were forbidden, as quite rightly, it was all about the art of Ballroom dance and not tricks… or I guess it could have been about my weight!!!

Interestingly though, during my competitive career there were one or two occasions when we did attempt to go to the dark side and include ‘a lift’ if you could call them that!  The highest I ever got was hanging down the back of my partner’s back feeling like a duck strung up in a Chinese takeaway window, being carried on to a dramatic and intense Paso Doble piece of music.  We felt it would make a greater impact to the audience by entering the floor and offering them the element of surprise (interesting eh?!) – it had become all about the surprise of the lift instead of the greatness of the dance!  There was this one other lift we did in the Rumba.  I had actually convinced my partner to let me put my left arm around his neck whilst his knees were bent and as he straightened his legs he would ‘lift’ me a whopping ½ a meter off the floor…oh and he’d turn around whilst I was up there!  And yes, that for us was a frightening and daring lift!!!  We only put it near the end of our routine in the belief that we would have wooed the public into believing our dance was so great that the lift at the end was more of an encore to demand applause especially when our goal was always to try to get a standing ovation from the Japanese audience.  The hardest and most demanding audience in the world…and up they rose like a breaching whale.

Well, you can imagine my horror when I was to join Strictly Come Dancing… welcome to lift central and so to a typical Monday morning at our professional rehearsals that would go something like this:

“You want me to be lifted….. you’re having a laugh right????” I would openly express my thoughts to all 13 other professionals.

Full of shock and horror I would continue with…

“Uh….Flavia and Lilia are surely the ones who get lifted?”

Clearly not.   Lifts were soon to be just part of my everyday life with all the Professional group dances.  I would take a journey from the sublime to the ridiculous.   Quite often I would find myself being propelled by Brendan Cole with possible brute force, not that he ever said anything except for me noticing the enormous exhale of air out of his mouth each time I was being propelled north to some landing point somewhere up round his nostrils! It would then be my turn to exhale air but mine would be vocally…

“Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I’M A MOTHER….. what the Dickens and Jones am I doing up here????”

“Oh my God woman just get …up….there…!!!” Brendan would politely request!!! ;)

With my inner thighs latching on to some upper part of Brendan’s torso all that was left to do was lift my arms high and wide, with a huge great smile….dunnnaaarrrr…

I could hear a different noise this time from Brendan’s lungs this time it was an immense sigh of relief that I was actually up there.

However, once up, I felt on top of the world.  Amazing, breathtaking, just like that moment on the Pepsi Max roller coaster at Blackpool where you are at the peak and looking out over the endless sea line and the wind is gracefully blowing in your hair and for a moment you are breathless, free, and flying…

Then suddenly reality hits, as just like that roller coaster within seconds you are on your way down!!! Similarly to the release of the ring on a can of a shaken Tango drink, that instant of utter and total disorientation all around, with my legs and arms seemingly being thrown everywhere, my inner organs feeling as though they are being processed for the Sunday chicken stuffing and together with my negative thoughts of uselessness, I am soon being thrown into a frenzy of tugging, pulling, dragging, heaving, shoving and finally the graceful landing and god forbid I forget the convincing smile of ….”I DID IT”….written all over my face in the target finishing position!

Making the grand finals with Mark Ramprakash on Strictly Come Dancing and can you believe this … I now felt I wanted to be the first to bring some of the biggest lifts yet seen on Strictly Come Dancing – I had crossed to ‘the Dark Side’.  That year I knew I was going up against Matt Dawson and Lilia and where Lilia had won Strictly the previous year with Darren Gough and really pulled out such amazing lift work, I knew these lifts had to be A-MAZ-ING…

Not believing I would ever be able to do any of them but knowing how close to winning that trophy we could be, I had to be sure I could convince you all that our show dance would be the one that would make you pick that phone up and vote for us one last time.  So our lift work had to be incredible and I would do whatever it would take!  I called a good friend of mine, who had initially been one of my competitors when I was in the competitive circuit, Hannah Karttunen and Victor Da Silva.  Hannah having given up her competitive career and gone into ‘show work’ were rapidly becoming ‘THE’ couple, bringing to our world of dance, incredible, mind blowing lifts and ones that they would also invite to perform live on Strictly.

“Hannah and Victor, I need three of the biggest lifts that you think we could handle…”  Did I actually say that, the mother who was being lumped around not long before by Brendan Cole… what had I just said!!!

“No problem said the gorgeous voice of Victor with muscles positively popping out of every orifice of his Popeye T-shirt.  There was such a calm and ease about Victor, one that made me feel I wasn’t about to board the Pepsi Max but rather ‘The Cinderella’ ride at Disney.

“Ok Karen just keep your core strong.  I will place my hand under your coaxes and up you’ll go”

“Oh Yes Victor no problem”  I could hear myself saying

“Anything you say”

“OK are you ready?” said Victor

“Woah,  stop wait, that is it, just keep my core strong?…. Hang on a second Victor… are you serious?… Oh my god you are… NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO!!”

And there I was up in the air just sitting on ‘ONE’ of Victor’s hands up above his head…. yes UP ABOVE HIS HEAD on just ONE of his hands!

I was in fear of breathing, I daren’t move but a single eyelash for fear of rocking ‘my core’ and I come tumbling down like a deck of cards.  Time stood still for a second and just one second later I was back on the floor.  Speechless, blushing, shocked and literally dumbfounded…

What had just happened?  Of course it was a walk in the park, something I do regularly, just being lifted up into the air by my crutch with one hand!  (Actually slightly distracting from my story… just think how easy it must be for Victor and Hannah to springclean cobwebs in their home…)

Anyway back to my story…

Now it was the turn of Mark and I and I hate to say it but somehow I didn’t have the exact same faith in my celebrity partner who was slowly dwindling away from the long weeks of training.  Also Mark’s arm muscles, even though he could whack a ball 70 meters into a crowded stadium, looked like he needed a ton of spinach before I would go anywhere… just how the dickens was he going to get me up in the air… with ‘ONE’ hand??

I was instantly demanding…

“Mats. Mats I need crash mats and lots of them!! Valium and a great deal of prayers please”

SO we were now in position, come on…. the instructions were easy, I just had to control my core and Mark just had to put his hand under my coaxes and up…. up… errrr… UP, Mark… COME ON UP, PUSH for God’s sake…. heave …. what… hadn’t he had his Shreddies for breakfast?

So it didn’t quite go as easy as it had seemed with Victor and I could see the camera crew first in fear then in utter hysterics!  Talk about Brendan exhaling a gasp of air when he was lifting me, Mark let out a bloody great fog horn making it apparently clear that this was not an easy lift.  So like lifting Bambi, with legs and arms going everywhere, it was part hilarious and part frightening as Mark attempted to raise the Titanic … again…. and again….. and again!!

For the sake of you all falling asleep, as I had meant to keep this blog short, I eventually made it up there and we even mastered two more death defying lifts.  If you get a chance go and look at Youtube you will see our final showcase dance to Shout by the amazing Lulu, currently dancing on Strictly now.  They weren’t the most graceful of lifts but let me tell you the adrenalin rush of that show was second to none. Mark and I couldn’t talk to anyone and we even had to ask production not to let us see the final story line they had prepared of our long journey together on Strictly, as I knew I would get all emotional and upset and if I went onto that stage crying from all the amazing ups and downs I had enjoyed with Mark during the show, I would never be able to handle the opening lift of our final dance together.

With the dreaded ONE handed lift being so hard I had choreographed it to be right at the beginning of the showcase dance and therefore also allowing Mark to have maximum energy to get me up there!  We were also to start up on the stage right in front of the band, so this now meant the feeling for me was even worse as I was now seemingly even higher in the air and… this time – no crash mats!  I think in the entire week leading up to that final night, we had only managed to get it right 8 times in total, as we were also having to rehearse four other dances for that grand final.

Well, the history books have been written, as soon our last dance of the Strictly season was over.  The audience were up on their feet screaming and cheering (and from memory – so too were the judges).  History books had once again proven… leaving the best to last, with the element of shock and surprise the addition of three great lifts would get people on their feet.  I had always thought that pleasing my Japanese market had been the hardest thing to do.  Yet years later pleasing you all at home and getting twelve million people jumping out of their seats, the day before Christmas Eve, would prove to be so so so much harder to achieve and… to me personally it proved that greatness still comes from the dancing but with an icing of lifts at the right place and at the right time the performance will be complete and the artist will have carried his role once again.

Could We Win the International Title?

Posted by Karen Hardy in Personal Karen Hardy Blog | Leave a comment

The morning of a major championships!  And this one I am no stranger to, having competed there since a very young age…it’s October the weather has changed to a colder feel and that always means the season of the International Championships at the Royal Albert Hall, London.  The sheer grandeur of this immense building itself is enough to set precedence to the level of dance you are expected to deliver – so no pressure then!  No matter how much you love dance it is safe to say the greater the prestige of the event the greater the pressure to raise your game and any real dancer will thrive for that pressure …especially me!

Waking on the morning of an event such as this was always strange for me, as now being seeded top in the world we were under immense pressure to raise our game every time and I repeat ‘every time’ we stepped out onto the floor.  On this occasion back in 1998, this would be a special day as the reigning 9 times International title holder had finally hung his shoes up in 1996 and even though we had not taken the title that following year (as the Finnish couple had pipped us at the post), we had soon after won some major World grand slam titles following that, thus meaning that this title was standing there for anyone to take!

Of course, I’d had an entire year to prepare for this major ballroom dance calendar event in the year however, travelling worldwide performing, coaching extensively and training for other major events, always resulted in something being not quite ready!  On this occasion it would be my dress.  I guess it comes with the game that being a perfectionist and wanting to win – everything had to be perfect.  My Polish dress designers had already been working for weeks on my dress for the International and I think two dresses had already ended up in the bin as the look wasn’t quite right!  Back then the dress making companies were not easy to come by and you definitely didn’t have sponsorship, so this would also mean a costly personal expense to me every time something was “not quite right”!

Basically, with all the travelling and training, I had not had enough time to get to the dressmakers for enough fittings and consequently the dress would now not arrive until I was in the changing areas on the day of the International Championships!

This was a major ‘no’ for a top professional dancer as one of the biggest things we always used as a weapon against our competitors (and still to this day) was the element of surprise in the ‘unveiling of THE dress’ for the night’s performance.  Always kept under the highest of confidentiality amongst the dressmakers nothing would be leaked out as – get it wrong and you could even set yourself up to lose a major title simply by getting the dress wrong!!  You have to imagine this is no longer a small Sunday competition in a church hall out in the backs of Dagenham somewhere, this was a battle for a World title.  This meant going into the history books, this meant leaving a message for every great dancer that will follow in your steps over decades and generations to come.   So pressures and demands had to be high.

As always the changing areas were packed and this night was no exception, down in the facilities under the great dance ballroom of the Royal Albert Hall.  Those couples that had qualified a few days earlier would now join us, the seeded couples and the great International Championships would begin.  Every nationality possible, from Europeans, to Scandinavians, the Eastern Block countries to the Australasia’s would be contesting as every country wants those rare grand titles to be brought home to their country (just as they do the Wimbledon title for tennis or the Olympic title for Athletics).

I remember adding a last layer of tan to my legs not only to be sure the definition of my leg action could be clearly seen or that it would make my white dress look even more spectacular but on this night it was to keep my mind busy as with 30mins to go before the first rounds started, my dress was still not here.  Bryan was really on edge now and so was I, where was my dress?  I did have a second dress hanging up on standby but this was one I had already been seen in earlier in the year and if you were a top champion you never came out in the same dress twice!  Looking at my dress hanging there in the changing room and willing this not to be the one I would wear, I could feel the hype was really building up around me as each of the couple’s adrenalin began to kick in.  The smell of all their tan was overpowering and combined with the Bostik glue we used to stick our earrings on with or any part of fabric, hair or item that could move during a dance and distract our lines soon started to bring an ill feeling over me!!  Still no dress and my heart was really pounding now.  We had trained so hard and the possibility of taking this grand title tonight could be within our reach.  But where was this bl**dy dress.  I could really feel Bryan starting to get angry now and I could see him walking towards me and I was dreading and actually fearing what he was going to say…suddenly I saw my dressmakers, pushing their way through all the couples who were well into their warm up routines by now!!!  They were here, they had my dress…

The dress was here but it was now only twenty minutes until call time!  My dress would normally have been on an hour before my performance to allow not only my own body to get used to the feel and weight of the dress but also for Bryan to be prepared for whatever possible distractions there could be from all the glitter and moving fabric.  But this would not be the case on this night.  Believe it or not with most dresses the fear was always how heavy the dress would be as it would stunt the speed of your movement, but on this night that wouldn’t be the problem as I had to just get on and deal with that – actually the problem was much much worse.  As I put the dress on I could see that the huge Swarovski gems had not been individually sewn on but rather stuck with glue as the dressmakers had run out of time.  But as I put the dress on I wanted to cry.  Yes, they had been up sticking rhinestones on all night, some 8-10,000 individual stones would land on this dress, but as it had been laid down on a table the stones were fine however as soon as I put the dress on I could suddenly feel the wet glue seep onto my skin and start to burn and then I saw the huge gems start to slowly slide down the dress…as the glue had not dried!!!

What could I do now, wear my old dress that was hanging up and that I had been seen in earlier in the year or keep this amazing new white and crystal dress on and deal with the stinging of the glue on my skin and hope no one could see all the stones sliding off.  Well with only ten minutes to go now the decision was made within a minute.  The white dress it was.  As we also knew another age old hidden tradition was, a white dress for as far back as you go in the history books, always had the stamp of a champion.

Well, my mind was totally messed up as I heard the late, great Mr Bill Irvine start to announce that the competition had started.  As we came up from the changing rooms and took to the floor I could feel every eye in the room on us, looking to see what ‘the’ dress was that the possible champions were wearing.  So with that glance over within a second and if the demanding audience and adjudicators were happy, their eyes would now turn to the strength of our dancing.  However, to me it was probably the worst moment of my dancing ever.  All those hours upon hours of training and preparing for this magnitude of an event had been destroyed all because of my dress.  You see, mentally you have to be like a rock when you enter an event such as this and the traumas with my dress had really set us off on the wrong foot.  Not only was I dealing with the glue of the dress and trying to deal with how heavy all the stones were weighing down on my body, Bryan was now angry and felt we weren’t doing enough on the dance floor and I was now not only playing a battle with my mental state but also with my physical relationship with my dance partner on the floor.  As the public you may see all the glamour and smiles but when a competitor takes it’s profession seriously, tempers will  rise and it can get a little hot on the dance floor, as there were world titles at stake as well as our pride.

I don’t think things could have got any hotter as we went from dance to dance and through round to round.  Endless battles were taking place on and off the floor.  The dress was feeling terrible rather than a million dollars, my energy was slowly dropping but I had the last five dances in the final to go.  An extra banana and mars bar had to hold me through until the end now and a few words from Conrad and my coach, and mentally I would get through these last five dances if it killed me (or so I told myself)!!

It was now the last dance…the Jive, thousands of audience members were screaming, the judges were evaluating, I’m sure my mum was crying and the room knew that the last dance of the International season was coming to a close.  I could feel my legs pounding on the floor and tiring by the second, I could hear my heart beating and my breath panting, I could feel Bryan now pulling me around on the floor and the look of a scream through his eyes shouting ‘COME ON I WANT MORE’!  Come on Karen you can do it….just the last few seconds, I could feel myself saying.  I could hear the orchestra building up to the finale of the song, I was so so so exhausted, I was forcing every muscle to work just that little bit more, I was begging my smile to hold for just a moment longer and for my partner and I to hold it together for one last bar of music….

The pain was over, the battle had finished and we had survived another battle on the dance floor.  All that was left now was the results.  Sitting down, slumped over and exhausted, underneath the grand ballroom where above everyone was enjoying a glass of wine, discussing their personal views on the night that had unfolded and who would be their champion and why, comes the most nerve wracking moment of any major world title event…the wait for the results.

Bryan and I would tend to go our own ways to reflect on what had gone on on the dance floor.  Could there have been anymore we could have done, should we lose this battle how would we make a comeback and did we do our best, were just some of the thoughts that would flash through our minds.   With every muscle completely exhausted in my body, sweat pouring down my face and dripping onto my once white dress which was now sodden with tan and makeup, I sat feeling completely numb and empty on some spare bit of bench that didn’t have some item I had needed for the night just gone.  My clothes, towels, tan, spare shoes, tracksuit, bananas… you name it just got pushed to the side whilst I sat with my head hung down.  I could hear the corridor start to rumble as those competitors previously knocked out started to head our way to congratulate us on our performance, my boyfriend Conrad was there reassuring me “you did OK”, our coach arrived to give us a ‘well done’ pat on the shoulder and just to check we had held it together (had we?) …it was just a moment of noise, confusion and upheave until the huge orchestra belted out the sound that we had been waiting for …the results were in.

Quickly making our way upstairs it was the tradition of the six finalists at the Royal Albert Hall to each take up a position behind the deep and heavy velvet curtains that were at the top of each stair case leading down past the stalls and onto the dance floor.  We had run to our position behind one of the curtains with everyone wishing us good luck on the way and we were now in our holding position.  The Amateur event results had been called out so the room was already screaming for the new champions that had just been crowned in those categories, the Professional Ballroom was being announced and the Professional Latin would soon follow always being the last at any grand event in the world to be announced.  Everyone knew it to be the hardest and most gruelling event at any competitions and still to this day, as well as the most exciting and crowd appealing competition but the toll on my body and now my mind was immense and beyond words.

6th place of the Professional Latin American category had been announced and the audience was already cheering with delight, 5th, then 4th place, and so quickly onto 3rd…we were still holding strong behind the curtain…our number still having not been called, there were just two places left.  Bryan and I hadn’t spoken a word up there behind those heavy deep dark coloured velvet curtains, our minds were miles away thinking what if , what if, what if…what if what…I was asking myself, if we lost, if we won what, what oh god come on just say the results…

“and the runners up…”

Then came what seemed the longest pause ever, with the clearest aim to build the suspense in the room and to further torture us…

“ from Finland ……..”

I screamed and screamed and screamed, I jumped on Bryan and screamed again.  With the runners up being Finland, it meant England….yes that was us had taken the grand and prestigious world recognised title of the new International Professional Latin American Champions .  Bryan and I were suddenly running as fast as we could down the stairs to the sheer screams of delight from the audience, the orchestra was booming out the fan fare for the winning couple and we were stood in the middle of the floor on our own, with everyone standing in their chairs applauding,  I had launched myself onto Bryan to take the biggest hug from him whether he wanted it or not!

We were now in the history books forever as being…The International Professional Latin American Champions….

The Mysterious World of Dance

Posted by Karen Hardy in Personal Karen Hardy Blog | Leave a comment

Hi everyone

Well having got the bug to want to share my fascination and personal passion with the world of dance, I have decided to start writing a blog about how dance affects my daily life!

It’s going to be as random as when I ended up teaching a group of gorgeous ladies at Eva Longoria’s birthday party last year in the toilets of the Dorchester Hotel, the simple steps of how to Salsa – to my international coaching of driving future world champions a step closer each day to achieve their goals of winning some of the biggest titles in the world.

From time to time you may hear a rant or two about my frustrations of the dance world or maybe how challenging my day is juggling eggs with appearing on the set at the BBC for Strictly Come Dancing to running back and forward supporting my students at their competitive events and having to deal with their vulnerable psychological imbalances that could make or break their performances that night.

A great deal of you may know how busy I am but even so I am still very excited to actually start this. I think it’s more for personal therapy than work, so stick with me as I may disappear for a few days during intensely busy times.

Of course I would love your feedback, views, thoughts, comments or even to share similar issues.

I really hope you will enjoy this blog and I’m planning to run it up to Christmas first and if you’re all enjoying it I’ll see if I can take you into 2012 with me, which is already booked out with lots of exciting things.

This sort of feels like I’m about to sit down to read you all a story on Jackanory (for those of you that remember that show)!

Happy reading…
